Problem: The
Installshield setup for MapCreate 7 copies incorrect versions of
two network files to the system directory.
Symptoms: After the
installation of MapCreate 7 onto a Windows 98 machine the
following may occur:
• A web browser and most other network applications fail to
connect to the internet.
• Typing ‘ipconfig’ at a command prompt gives
“IP Configuration Failed to initialize
Winsock.”
Solution: If a network connection (perhaps on another
machine) is available follow the ‘Alternate
Instructions’ below, otherwise:
Please have your Windows 98 installation disk ready
- At the run command dialog box
(Start->Run…) type sfc to open the System File
Checker utility.
- Select the ‘Extract one
file from the installation disk’ option.
- In the edit box, type
‘C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mswsock.dll’
- Insert your Windows 98
Installation disk into your CD-ROM drive (this example uses
drive D).
- Click ‘start’ on
the SFC dialog.
- In the ‘Restore
from:’ edit box, type ‘D:\Win98’
(substituting your CD-ROM drive letter for ‘D’ if
yours differs).
- Click
‘OK’.
- Click
‘Skip’.
- After the file has been
successfully extracted, repeat steps 3 through 8 but instead of
typing ‘C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mswsock.dll’ in step 3,
type ‘C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ws2help.dll’.
- Reboot.
Windows should now be able to
connect to the network.
Alternate Instructions:
If you have internet access, you can download the two system
files from:
mswsock.dll
ws2help.dll
1. Download the two files from
the above links.
2. Copy them to your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, clicking
‘yes’ or ‘yes to all’ to overwrite the
current files.
3. Reboot.
Your network connection should now work.
