Lowrance's StructureScan™, side and down-scanning system, is proving to be an important tool in the post-Tsunami clean-up.

Lowrance's StructureScan™, side and down-scanning system, is proving to be an important and cost-effective tool in the post-Tsunami clean-up efforts in Japan. The equipment is being used in Miyagi and Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan to check sediment levels, search for bodies and to detect underwater objects that have become navigation hazards

Navico Asia Pacific donated several HDS multi-function displays and StructureScan™ modules to the rescue teams through its Japanese Distributor, Jim Quartz, immediately following the disaster. Portable systems were built and have been provided to Miyagi Prefectural Government and National Research Fisheries Department and NGO organizations working in the affected areas.

Mr Tohru Itoh of Jim Quartz, Tokyo reported that due to the high level of sediment in the water column, visual inspection by divers was difficult so the Lowrance StructureScantm system was extremely useful in the surveying efforts. StructureScan™ files have been written to CD ROM for later viewing on desktop applications. "Many of the reefs have changed completely and so the charts developed from the StructureScan™ surveying will also be useful when the fishing resumes" Mr. Itoh added.
